What about this? 99% chance of losing 1-10% of gold/xp. 1% chance of one of your ability scores being reduced by 1. It couldn't be dispelled, making it last till server reset. If it only lasts until server reset I'd make it much nastier, like -4 to all stats

If it only lasts until server reset I'd make it much nastier, like -4 to all stats I'd rather have it happen more often and leaving the minus smaller. If it gives you a -4 to all stats it basically ruins your char till reset. Give it a higher percentage of happening - 10-15% and a -2 to one random stat, with the minuses being cumulative.

All wonderfull and slightly amusing suggestions! This wont be a quick resolution, but at least we are going somewhere.
I am against more xp loss than what it is (due to possibly exploites of re-leveling your toon) but DO favor something that has a penalty.
Player effects that are lasting until next reset seem reasonable and opens the door to a ton of humoreous and slightly aggitating possibilities! Gender change and stat loss seem the most obvious but what about things like Zombie form, or decreased skills? Maybe something less harm like a wraith with NO gear and an inability to interact with ANY NPC until you retreived your corpse?

That could be cool - you respawn, but something went wrong! You are respawned as a zombie (slow speed, minuses to abilities etc.) ^^

i think stat drops til reset would defeat the purpose of the whole trying to make the server more explorble lol now i have to wait til reset for my character to be up to par? however i do agree with exp losses or some kind of ghost form to retrieve your corpse that could be intresting. maybe even some kind of dialog when you they try to type that makes the zombie say .. mmmm Brains

I don't think something like a small percentage of a -2 to a random stat would really destroy your exploration options. I don't think -1 to either saves, ab, damage, spells/day, 1hp/lvl or a little less spell damage/duration impacts your character that much, especially as a simple potion can temporarily counter it if you aren't capped at +12 to a stat already.
But it just might make your character a bit weaker if you manage to build up a few of those minuses (depending on how and where they stacked - if you have 6 base charisma and you get 6 minuses for an altogether of -12 to charisma it wouldn't do much, just decrease it to 3). But to get any real minuses on more then one ability you would need to die and respawn at least a few dozen times before the server resets.
As for the whole ghost form... I'm kinda torn. On one side it sounds awesome, on the other side I can see quite some problems when you can wander around wherever you want without anyone/anything being able to target/hurt you.

As for the whole ghost form... I'm kinda torn. On one side it sounds awesome, on the other side I can see quite some problems when you can wander around wherever you want without anyone/anything being able to target/hurt you. You could put a time limit on it. Yes this mean some one running to the edge of the world to get a "time" so no one will say...i didnt/couldn't make it. (Please don't use a monk to test this) ;D You could also give a clock/timer in the upper corner so they have a count down? Worse case do a flashing thing like the potions do. When the ability about to come off it "flashes/blinks" Honestly, if some one want to stay ghost form and run a muck so they can make note on what mob it around what corner let them. Just set it up if the touch anything your visible. This includes chest/doors/ ect. We wouldn't want any one to be pp now would we? I only know a few people who would set there all day and go...three door to left...mob so and so...turn left...2 mobs..ect. And for some strange reason they have the time, let me know when the map is done. No clue if any of this is possible but i figured i throw it out there. : )
