I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed much in the past, but I think it's time for a change. I think it's time change the respawn penalty from leaving a corpse containing the character's entire inventory, to an exp/gold loss.
Back in the day in the day it added a twist to a PvP server, where you were afraid someone would loot your belongings. I know it happened to me several times (thanks Kitty). But with the way things are now, I don't see much PvP happening any more. At most there's only a few people on at any given time now who have to stop what they're doing to run across the server on a rez mission, if they can get to you at all.
Most deaths occur during exploration of new or difficult areas which can make it near impossible to get back to your corpse. So your other option is to wait for a reset which could take days.
Lets make an environment where people aren't reluctant to take a chance to try a new area. Lets change the respawn penalty.

It has been discussed (albeit behind closed doors). What are you suggesting?

I think it's time change the respawn penalty from leaving a corpse containing the character's entire inventory, to an exp/gold loss. That would be my guess P.S. Why let characters die anyway? hehe

I'm saying the system should change, from leaving a corpse containing each and every item you're carrying, to losing some exp and some gold. The amount of each is debateable.
Is it possible to lose enough exp to lose a level? If, for instance, you lost 10% of both exp and gold a 40th level character with 800,000 exp would lose 80,000 exp and be demoted to 39th level.
Exploring Dominia to find the undiscovered is what motivates every adventurer. Without adventuring, a Bard's song would be empty!

I have to agree with Tony that dropping all gear on a corpse doesn't really work in the favor of exploring the server. I don't think that you should be able to lose levels when you die - you should lose an amount of xp if possible, if it would result in you losing a level, lose less then that. Maybe a system like this: Characters lose 10% gold/xp when they die. If they don't have enough xp (they would lose levels from it) they lose only as much xp as possible without losing the level - the xp that should be lost over the level is changed into gold in a ration 1xp = 5gp. If you don't have enough gold to pay off the debt, an item is randomly taken from your inventory for every 100.000 gold that you still have to pay. It would work so that for every item deduced your debt is lessened by 100k, so if your debt is 100.001 it would deduce 2 items. So if a level 40 character with 800.000xp and 100.000 gold would die, he would need to pay 80.000xp and 10.000 gold. Since he can only pay 20.000xp, the remaining 60.000xp would change into gold - 60.000 xp = 300.000 gold. So his total gold payment would be 310.000 gold but he only has 100.000 - his debt would be 210.000 meaning 3 random items would be taken from his inventory. It would allow for better exploration as long as you have enough xp/gold but still you wouldn't really want to respawn if not needed. The % lost, xp:gold ratio and gold:items ratio are debatable as always . Thoughts?

I hate the thought of losing boss gear or a craft item that I don't have equipped at the time of death. How about a random percentage of gold being left behind, mayhaps a d6 roll to see if it's 10-60%? A d4 would be good too, but no d10! Leave it on the corpse to be reclaimed, or claimed, by a brave soul. Even better, the gold left behind can go into a fund to buff the Kindred goons!

And what happens when you don't have any gold and are level 40 already (if we keep to the idea that you can't lose levels when you respawn)? Basically you can run around and die as much as you want without any penalty at all apart from maybe some xp you could've used to make scrolls/wands/potions.

Then level(s) should be lost. What if you run around with no gold and an empty inventory? You can only go down to 780k xp? I say lose the gold and level(s) but keep the gear.

I don't have any valuable gear yet but I also agree to keep the gear. Better to lose levels than equipment

Agreed on no longer losing gear. I think the whole reasoning behind the gear drop was to promote PvP action. Now that the player base is down so much there is no PvP.
XP loss (to include level loss) and GP loss seems like the way to go.

While I'd still like to see that respawning was a *tad bit* more dangerous then simply losing a flat/percentage ammount of xp/gold I'll go along with you guys . If you can lose levels from respawning too then I'm okay with no gear loss. However, 10% of all xp seems a bit harsh to me (will anyone really respawn when they will lose that much xp? It kinda destroys the point of changing the system then imo).

Respawning = keeping the mission, whatever mission it is, alive. I never respawn on purpose (if I had a gold piece for every time I accidentally respawned I would've retired by now). The choice is a no-brainer to me, the ability to use the character now and lose the gold/xp or waiting for a reset and someone to come on and rez me.
If you want to make it a *tad bit* more dangerous, then make the amount more random: 95% chance of losing 1-10% of gold and xp and 5% chance of changing gender upon respawn.

...and 5% chance of changing gender upon respawn. Are you serious? ;D ;D

What about this?
99% chance of losing 1-10% of gold/xp. 1% chance of one of your ability scores being reduced by 1. It couldn't be dispelled, making it last till server reset.

5% chance of changing gender upon respawn. This is quite possibly the best idea I have ever heard come out of the forums........Ha Ha Silence
