Cool, there's nothing more satisfying then doing the work yourself.
I buy a repoed house in a good neighborhood, but in bad shape and completely refurbish it every 2-3 years. If you live in a house for 2 years you don't have to pay taxes on the capital gains. I'm on my 4th house now, and by rolling the profit over from one house to the next, my next house should be essentially free.
The problem is in the current market I may be sticking around this house for 4 or 5 years waiting for the housing value decline to turn back around.

You know, I almost did that same thing- get in on all the action. I decided against it at the last minute though and dumped it all into my own house. Looking back- it was a good thing I did.
Its good to hear successes though. I'm glad you're not loosing your shirt!!

I got lucky there at the end. My last house I just sold, actualy closing on it Dec 5th. The housing market has been on a down trun for the better part of a year, but the last few months have been huge losses. I got lucky to get out when I did, no telling what that house is going to be worth in 6 months or a year in this economic climate. That's why I've decided to pull out for a few years to see what happens.

Good time to buy.
The track hoe is fun to drive, isn't it? I used one to dig footings when I built retaining walls on either side of my driveway. I had a blast!

The building trade is collapsing big time over here. my neighbor (<- this is the correct spelling of neighbour (NOW IT IS )is a JCB driver and has been made redundant I have a mate that works in a brick factory you wont of heard of bricks cos you only build prefab or out of wood I've watch Norm Abram, but that's what they use to build real houses in proper countries not I understand its different in the colonies but you should educate yourselves, any he has lost his job too basically virtually all building of new house has stopped its not a good time to sell at all over here

Yes- for sure the current state of affairs globaly is taking it's toll. Hope your neighbor has an alternate skill or at the very least, a nestegg to whether the storm.
Yer funny- "have not heard of bricks" and "build real houses in proper countires". Why would anyone need to educate themselves?! ;D

I have a mate that works in a brick factory NOW, you're speaking my language Mate. WooHoo, bricks! On this side of the pond, bricks are used as a veneer. Gone are the days of masonry buildings. (Think earthquake).

We are also not that fond of ghosts or their kind. We have some dwarves and gnomes, but that's it really - we do have witches, Jaga baba and Tilka tho
